The height of romance: Women want partners who are 8in taller than them but men prefer a gap of just 3in

It is one more thing that couples can’t see eye to eye on.
Research shows that men and women have different views on the ideal height of their partner.
A woman is happiest with a man who towers over her by eight inches.
A man, however, prefers to be just three inches taller than the lady in his life.

Men prefer a smaller gap in height, according to a study of 700 men and women.
They look for someone who is just three inches shorter than they are.
Researchers also quizzed 50,000 men and women about how happy they were with their own height, and found that the ideal stature for a man is six foot three inches
However, for a woman, it is five foot and nine inches. Evolutionary psychologist Gert Stulp, from the University of Groningen, in the Netherlands, who led the research, said in The Independent on Sunday: 'Both men and women prefer to be in a couple where the man was taller than the woman, but not too tall.
'The preference was most pronounced in women who, unlike men, considered partner heights unacceptable if they resulted in her being taller.'

Dr Viren Swami, a social psychologist at the University of Westminster, added: 'There are two main theories.
'The biological theory is that taller men may have higher status or reproductive success.
'The second social theory is that it reflects a cultural idea, where tall men are viewed as masculine and tall women violate cultural norms.'
A recent study on thousands of British couples revealed, not surprisingly, that in the vast majority - 92.5 per cent - the man was taller.
Women had the edge in just 4 per cent of the pairs investigated.
Couples of equal height were even more of a rare breed, making up the remaining 3.5 per cent.
There are a host of other celebrity couples who don't let height interfere including model Sophie Dahl and musician Jamie Callum, left, and pop star Kyllie Minogue and Spanish model Andres Velencoso, right
